Top 3 Ways Startups Can Build a Workplace Culture Rooted in Diversity and Inclusivity

As the semiconductor industry continues to face a talent shortage amid the ongoing demand for skilled workers, it also faces a diversity challenge, particularly with women and underrepresented minorities. The industry lags behind other technology sectors in representation, with women making up a median of only 20-29% of the semiconductor workforce and even lower representation in technical leadership roles. Racial and ethnic minorities also face underrepresentation, with Black employees making up 4% and Hispanic employees 13% of the industry, according to a 2019 report from the Semiconductor Industry Association.

Lack of diverse representation can hinder a company’s ability to adapt to evolving markets and miss out on unique ideas that drive innovation. This can result in decreased competitiveness and an inability to effectively address the needs of a diverse customer base, ultimately impacting business growth. For emerging companies and startups like Saras, fostering a diverse workforce is essential to driving innovation, creativity and better decision-making. Diverse teams offer broader perspectives, which lead to stronger solutions and a more inclusive workplace culture. In fast-paced industries like the semiconductor industry, this diversity plays a vital role in attracting and retaining top talent.

Here are three actionable strategies and insights that support a positive workplace culture rooted in diversity and inclusivity.

1. Expanding Career Growth Programs and Diversifying the Hiring Process

Building a workplace where people enjoy coming in day to day, feel like they bring value, and want to stay starts with a conscious commitment to inclusive hiring. As teams begin to grow, diversity metrics should be reviewed regularly within the workforce to identify areas that need improvement. This includes analyzing the gender, racial, and cultural makeup of both team members and leadership, as well as assessing pay equity and opportunities for advancement.

In parallel, the environment of the workplace must feel safe and welcoming. That begins with leadership setting the tone – demonstrating that diverse ideas and different ways of thinking are welcome and encouraged. By creating this type of environment, employees feel more comfortable and empowered to “show up as they are and contribute, adding value.”

Many employees aim to improve their skills and become competitive candidates within the industry. To support those efforts, our team is dedicated to strengthening its inclusive culture by expanding career development programs. This year, we’re introducing new career development opportunities and offering guidance to support all employees in building their skills and preparing for the next stage in their professional growth.

2. Celebrating Diversity and Community-Building

Another important investment startups can begin to implement is community engagement by partnering with organizations and initiatives that focus on supporting underrepresented communities, both within the industry and in the wider community.

To celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our team, our employees participate in an annual Dishing Up Diversity potluck event. As we saw our team gather and eat together at lunch, we noticed the variety of dishes and personal stories behind them. This generated the idea for us to incorporate a fun community-building event themed around the diversity of not only different cultural cuisines, but family traditions and the significance behind each specific dish. Since launching in 2022, the event has quickly become something the employees look forward to. It sparks great conversations, builds new connections across departments, and adds a personal touch that strengthens our team culture and spirit while also expanding the palates of many.

Our company also takes part in other community-building initiatives. For example, this year our Atlanta team members are participating in the Georgia Brain Tumor 5K walk to support community wellness and local causes. Through these initiatives, our team comes together outside of work, stays active, and gives back to the communities we’re proud to be part of.

3. Company Values and Mindset

Developing core company values that guide all employees toward creating an inclusive, respectful, and rewarding environment for everyone is essential. Our core company values are reflected in how we approach each of our internal initiatives and community engagements:

  • Respect honors every individual’s background and contributions, especially during our celebrations and recognition moments.
  • Execution ensures thoughtful planning and meaningful impact for events and initiatives.
  • Teamwork brings people together, fostering unity and collaboration across departments.
  • Accountability keeps diversity and inclusion at the forefront of all we do.
  • Recognition celebrates contributions and milestones, ensuring employees feel valued.

Additionally, we embrace a forward-thinking, supportive and purpose-driven mindset. With a focus on professional development, open communication, and a strong sense of teamwork, we ensure everyone has the resources and support they need to reach their full potential. At our Company, everyone has a seat at the table to contribute.

Incorporating these three strategies into our focus on diversity, community-building and inclusion contributed to our team receiving recognitions like the 3D InCites: Best Places to Work Award, which we consider a true badge of honor. It’s more than just an award, it’s a reflection of the culture we’ve worked hard to build. But the true recognition by our own employees affirms that our commitment to creating a welcoming, people-centered workplace is making a real difference and serves as a strong motivator for us to keep pushing forward with purpose and integrity.
